The Medical Laboratory Technician collects and prepares specimens such as blood, tissues and body fluids according to established procedures and physicians' orders. This position performs various laboratory tests on these specimens in such areas as chemistry, hematology, bacteriology, urinalysis, serology and blood bank, evaluating for infection or abnormalities. Testing includes setting and adjusting laboratory equipment and apparatus such as glassware, balance, microscope, and slides, adding reagents or indicator solutions from collected specimens, and subjecting specimens for processing according to established procedures. This position observes reactions, changes of color or formation of precipitates; prepares and studies slides using a microscope; subjects treated specimens to automatic chemical analyzing equipment to make qualitative and quantitative analyses. The Medical Laboratory Technician evaluates the validity of the test results through the use of quality control procedures and knowledge of normal values and relationship of values.
